Law Firms are 'Miserable Places to Work'
Mac Mackay - Managing Partner: dawlaw
And this finding is not limited to law firms, either, according to the CMI
It gets worse…
A lack of ‘skill’ and to a certain extent ‘will’ among line managers to recognize and meet the motivational needs of their staff is one of the key findings of a survey by ‘Motivational Research Ltd.’
Today, other challenges to motivating employees include lack of time / too much work, failing to keep up the momentum once motivation levels have been raised, and difficulties caused by the recession, including squeezed budgets and limited national pay deals.
The study found that over a half of organizations responding ignored ‘motivation’ as either “people were lucky to have a job” or “they didn’t know how to measure it”. Of those that did, some used staff surveys and others relied on staff appraisals. Sadly, having measured, few did anything proactive about their findings!
So, what were the five top motivators for managers defined in this study?
Ever wondered what would motivate your lawyers? You would not have to keep many of the best ones (and save on recruitment costs) to recoup the investment in finding out.
Now, while management training might not be mandatory for you – beyond Management Course Stage One – the way we do it at ‘dawlaw’ is a dynamic way for you to start to build the hardest of skills – the soft skills – as a manager of lawyers.
So, want to survive and prosper? Improve the engagement of your people...
